Definition: German scholar Ernst Sellin was interested in biblical archaeology, and although not a trained archaeologist, excavated at Jericho, Tell Ta`annek and Tel Balatah assisted by classical archaeologist Carl Watzinger. Sellin was based at the Department of Theology at the University of Vienna and worked under the auspices of the German Oriental Society of Berlin.
