Shen Kua [1031-1095]

Definition: The 11th century Chinese scholar, engineer, mathematician, astonomer, cartographer, politician, writer, and Go player Shen Kua was a phenomenal character in Chinese history. Among his many interests was geology, and like Charles Lyell some 800 years later, identified fossil shell beds as extinct lake bottoms.
