Shona Chiefdoms

Definition: The chiefdoms of the Shona were located between the Limpopo and Zambezi rivers in southern Africa between 1100 and 1500 AD. Based on cattle herding economy, the Shona were also involved in long-distance trade. The trade center for the Shona was Great Zimbabwe, which at one time housed 18,000 people. The descendants of the Shona still live in what is now Zimbabwe and South Africa.
