Definition: The Soninké were (and are) traders of western Africa with an oral history tradition dating back nearly 1000 years. The empire arose in the 3rd century AD, as traders in iron, salt, and gold. Around 600 AD, the city of Kumbi Saleh (in present day Mauritania) arose, built by Soninké traders and eventually the capital city of the Ghana empire.
