Definition: The archaeological site of Spiro Mounds is a Caddoan tradition site, located in the Arkansas Valley of eastern Oklahoma, in the southern plains region of the United States. The site includes an area of about 90 acres, with a small village and cemetery, dated between AD 840 and 1450. Spiro was a regional center of the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex. Excavations there were conducted in the 1930s by the American Works Progress Administration, and more recently by the Oklahoma Archaeological Survey and the University of Oklahoma, led by James Brown and Timothy Perttula.
