Definition: Statue-menhirs are a kind of megalithic standing stone consisting of a carved human or human-like statue of life or larger size. Statue-menhirs are found throughout southern France, the western Alps, and on the Mediterranean islands of Corsica and Sardinia. The earliest (in France and the western Alps) are dated to the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods; the later ones on Corsica and Sardinia are about 1000 years younger.
