Subsurface Testing

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Archaeologists use the term 'subsurface testing' to mean exploration of an archaeological site using shovels or mechanical equipment. Much of archaeology can be done with pedestrian survey or non-invasive or remote sensing investigations such as ground penetrating radar or soil resistivity. I should say, some people would classify remote sensing as subsurface testing---but sometimes, you just have to get your hands dirty.

This glossary entry is part of the Dictionary of Archaeology. Sources for the term include the references listed on the front page of the Dictionary, and the websites listed in the sidebar.
Also Known As: Shovel testing, excavation (not really synonyms)
