Sylvester Manor (New York, USA)

Definition: Sylvester Manor is the name of a plantation established in 1651 for provisioning two sugar plantations in Barbados, owned by Nathaniel Sylvester and his brother, Constant, and two others, Thomas Middleton and Thomas Rouse. Originally encompassing all of Shelter Island, the current 270 acre estate encompasses the core of the first plantation.

Archaeological research has been conducted over several years at the site at field schools run by the Department of Anthropology and the Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Reseearch, at the University of Massachusetts. Excavations have identified artifacts and foundations dating to the 17th century occupation.
