Definition: The Taj Mahal, at Agra, India, must be the most famous grave monument in the world. Built at the request of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century in memory of his wife and queen Mumtaz Mahal who died in AH 1040 (AD 1630), the exquisite architectural structure was completed in 1648. The Islamic architect Ustad 'Isa is credited with the design of the white marble edifice. Both Shah Jahan and his queen are buried in the mausoleum, the upper levels are open to the public; and there is an amazing virtual tour linked in the side bar.
