Definition: The site of Tenayuca is a Middle Post Classic period city and pyramid located in the state of Mexico north of Mexico City. The city was founded about AD 1200 by the Chichimecs led by Xoxotl, and it became the Chichimec (Aztec) capital before Tenochtitlan was built. The pyramid was built after AD 1200. Excavations at Tenayuca have been conducted by I. Marquina, and most recently by Beatriz Zuniga Barcenas.
