Definition: Ternifine is an Acheulean site located near Palikao in the Oran region of Algeria, which contained three mandibles (jaw bone fragments) and a skull fragment probably assigned to Homo erectus (or possibly H. ergaster), dated between 730,000 and 600,000 years ago. Acheulian tools were found in association with the skeletal material, as were theropithecus faunal material. Ternifine was excavated by French paleontologist Camille Arambourg in the 1950s.
