Transportation

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Transportation--building roads, canals, viaducts, and carts, boats, ships to travel on them--is an early important invention of humans. Roads permitted travel between communities, allowing trade networks to develop and access to neighbors for gaining spouses.

The oldest known prepared road in Europe is the Neolithic period Sweet Track site, a raised plank walkway across a marsh in Somerset, England, built between 3807-3806 BC according to dendrochronological records.
