Archaeology Videostore - Adventure

An archaeological site means adventure and romance--at least in the movies.

A Month in the Country
1987. Archaeologist Charles Moon (Kenneth Branagh, no less) is looking for the grave of his own ancestor in Yorkshire at the end of World War II when he meets an art historian played by Colin Firth.

Ace Drummond
1936. In the second half of the classic thirteen-part serial about adventurer Ace Drummond, Ace seeks the famous archaeologist father of heroine Peggy Trainor. Almost certainly one of the influences on Lucas and Spielberg's Indiana Jones trilogy.

The Adventures of Indiana Jones
Steven Spielberg's trilogy of the adventurer archaeologist Indiana Jones is available as a boxed set these days.

Emerald Forest
1985. Powers Boothe as an engineer searches for his son among the Yanomamo. More ethnology than archaeology, but interesting on several levels.

The English Patient
1996. Famous archaeologist Ralph Fiennes, in the adaptation of a book I openly admit I couldn't get through.

King Solomon's Mines
1950. Deborah Kerr, Stewart Granger, Richard Carlson go-ahunting for a diamond mine.

Lara Croft: Cradle of Life
Lara Croft seeks some wonderously powerful thingy that will destroy the world if it isn't found. I think. The sequel to Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and based on the video game of the same name. Angelina Jolie, Jon Voigt.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Lara Croft, daughter of famous archaeologist Jon Voigt (if I ever write a screenplay, it'll be about an unknown archaeologist, I promise), has almost as much fun hanging around in mysterious places and finding adventure and killing evil doers, as she does in the video game.

Lara Croft: Two-Pack Gift Set
Perfect for the archaeologist in your crowd with a peculiar sense of humor (and don't they all have one of those?), starring Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie), daughter of famous archaeologist Jon Voigt. Includes Tomb Raider and the sequel, Cradle of Life.

Legend of the Lost
1957. John Wayne as adventurer Joe January and Sophia Loren as the beautiful 'Dita' in search of lost cities in the Sahara, led by Rosanno Brazzi, the son of a famous archaeologist.

March or Die!
1977. Archaeologists Max von Sydow and Catherine Deneuve are protected by the Foreign Legion in Morocco, in this rather bloody movie, which a friend tells me is continually on cable these days. Not currently available on Pricegrabber, but a must-see classic for fans of the genre.

Pimpernel Smith
1942. Famous archaeologist Leslie Howard moonlights as a spy during World War II.

The Purple Rose of Cairo
1985. Okay, it's cheating, a little; fictional archaeologist Jeff Daniels makes a play for real-life waitress Mia Farrow.

Stargate
1994. Famous Egyptologist James Spader stumbles on a portal to an alien planet where it turns out Jaye Davidson is Ra. Who knew?
