Definition: Vallonet Cave is a paleolithic cave in the maritime Alps of southeastern France, near the Mediterranean coast near Nice. The site is believed to represent one of the earliest appearances of Homo erectus in Europe. No bones were recovered, and the assemblage is limited to four flakes and five limestone pebble tools. The artifacts are similar to those recovered from Olduvai Gorge, and on this basis are said to be about 900,000-750,000 years old. As you might imagine, Vallonet Cave is somewhat controversial, particularly since there is no firm date or hominin remains associated with the artifacts.
