Definition: The Vegas site is located on the coast of Ecuador and is a semi-sedentary habitation site where fisher-hunter-gatherers lived between about 8000 and 6000 years ago. The site contains an abundance of remains from marine and coastal fish and marine life, chipped and ground stone tools, and evidence for incipient horticulture of squash, maize and gourds.
The Vegas site belongs to the cultural group called the Vegas Complex, or Las Vegas Culture (both of which names seem to cry out for bad jokes, so I'll resist). The name describes pre-ceramic hunter-gatherers living on the Ecuador coast between about 8000 and 5500 years ago, and they represent the typical lifeways for coastal folks of the time from Panama to Peru.
