By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: The modern city of Waterford, located in Ireland, was settled by the Viking Sitricus in 853 AD, or so tradition says. Remnants of the old Viking town, excavated in the 1980s by Maurice F. Hurley and colleagues, include houses, churches and stone wall and ditch defense lines. Reginald's Tower in Waterford, built in 1185 AD, is among the oldest standing civic structures in Europe.
