Definition: Wessex is a region in south-central England where several large earthworks are found, dated between 4000 and 2000 BC, including the Neolithic through early Bronze Ages. Wessex includes the English counties of Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire, and Berkshire. The monuments recorded within Wessex include causewayed enclosures, like Hambledon Hill; henges like Stonehenge and Avebury; alignments like the Dorset Cursus; and burial mounds like the Boscome Bowmen and the Avebury Archer.
