Abandoned Church at Wharram Percy

Doug Belshaw
Definition: The archaeological site of Wharram Percy is located in Yorkshire about 30 kilometers from York; it is a type of site called a Deserted Medieval Village (DMV).

First occupied as a settlement during the Iron Age, and through succeeding Roman, Saxon and Norse occupations, Wharram Percy was abruptly abandoned about 1500 after surviving the Black Death. Investigations at the site have found remains of houses, churches, meeting rooms and farm fields.

Wharram Percy is now owned by English Heritage and open to the public. Archaeologists who have worked on Wharram Percy include John G. Hurst and Maurice Beresford.
