Definition: The British city of Winchester is the capital of Wessex, England, and counts its founding from the 7th century AD. Most interesting is the parts of the extant 11th century church called Winchester Cathedral, begun in 1079 by the Norman bishop Walkelin. Other extant pieces of architecture in Winchester include the Great Hall, the remaining piece of Winchester Castle, built in 1067, in fact right after the Norman Conquest.
