Definition: Windmill Hill is a Neolithic causewayed enclosure, located near the far more famous site of Avebury in Wiltshire, England. Although not much can be seen of the site today, the 20 acre site includes three circuits of defensive ditches, an extensive barrow cemetery, and a thick midden deposit, dated between 3600-3300 BC. Archaeologists such as Stuart Piggott, Alexander Keiller, and O.G.S. Crawford have interpreted the site as a location of multiple reuse as a central gathering place for the isolated Neolithic farmsteads in the region.
Windmill Hill was the focus of several intensive excavations by Keiller in the 1920s, Isobel Smith in the 1950s, and Alasdair Whittle in 1998.
