Definition: Woodhenge is an archaeological site discovered in Avebury, England, within a few kilometers of Stonehenge. The site consists of several concentric rings of postmolds where large oak timbers once stood. The site belongs to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, and radiocarbon dates are between 2300-2000 BC, or roughly contemporaneous with Stonehenge. Known since 1925, Woodhenge was excavated during the 1970s; excavators discovered a child's burial near the center. Woodhenge is open to the public, and concrete posts have been placed to indicate the pattern of timbers.
