Itzamná, Maya God of Creation

Itzamná was the god of creation for the Maya civilization, who invented writing and telling the future. He was considered the creator of the world and all the other deities, and by the postclassic period in the Yucatan, he was considered the god of medicine as well.

If you look closely at this cornice of the Palace of the Temple of the Frescoes at the archaeological ruins in Tulum, you can see a stucco mask of what some have interpreted as Itzamná. He is facing to the right, he has a hooked nose and a curled lip. His squared-off jaw is almost cut from the photo at the very bottom of the image. See him?

And, if you read contributing writer Nicoletta Maestri's latest article, Itzamná, Maya God of Creation, you will learn a lot more about this creative deity.
