Archaeological Sites

Boulder Creek
A rockshelter located in a small cave in a limestone bluff located on the Black Hills National Forest; occupations from Early Plains Archaic through historic period.

Crow Creek Massacre Site
South Dakota, Plains Tradition village where 500 people were killed in the 4th century.

Jim Pitts
A Paleoindian site excavated by the State Archaeological Research Center in the 1990s.

Hartford Beach
A fortified prehistoric occupation dating to about A.D. 1100, excavated by members of the State Archaeological Research Center.

The Licking Buffalo Site
A Besant bison kill site (named after the landowner); excavations by the State Archaeological Research Center.

Mitchell Site
Initial Middle Missouri site in South Dakota; not a lot of information here; but links describing the Archeodome.

University Programs

Archaeology Laboratory, Augustana
Conducts research and preservation studies, from the Department of Art and Anthropology.

Billings Curation Center
The main repository for archaeological and ethnographic collections recovered from the Bureau of Land Management's properties in Montana and the Dakotas. Includes brief descriptions of several archaeological sites.

Plains Conference 1999
