Definition: One of two urban capitals in Saudi Arabia considered the birthplaces of Islam (the other being Medina), Mecca was a pagan shrine converted to the religious center of Islam by Muhammed in 650 AD (8 A.H.). Also, the traditional birthplace of the Prophet Muhammed.
