Mississippian Civilization

Definition: The Mississippian civilization was made up of sedentary farmers of the interior rivers in North America between Ohio and Iowa, Minnesota and Louisiana along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, between about AD 1000-1540. They grew corn (maize), and had extensive trade networks and elaborate earthworks. The largest Mississippian capital was at Cahokia, on the east side of the Mississippi river in the state of Illinois from what is now St. Louis, Missouri.
